2023 REVIEWS

This page is full of my reviews of movies and TV shows released in 2023. It is organized by date, so you will have to scroll farther down for movies that came out later in the year. Also, most of these reviews are copied straight from my Letterboxd, so that’s why some are significantly shorter than others. Sorry if missing or short reviews bother you, edits to this page will be made soon. Feel free to talk to me about anything on this page, my contact information is on the ‘About’ page. Thank you.

Scream VI

Definitely turned up the gore for this one, liked it a lot. The reveal however is weak, and of course I wish we could’ve seen Neve Campbell again.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

If they bring back Levi for this role ever again, he needs to learn how to play his character.

John Wick: Chapter 4

I didn’t see the first one AND don’t remember the second and third very well but I still enjoyed this movie. The action is good, but could be better. I feel like this serves as a fitting end to John Wick’s story.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Was better than I had thought it would be before seeing it. Think I would’ve liked it more if I actually played D&D though. Still a funny and enjoyable movie.

Air

Really great movie about Nike trying to sign on Michael Jordan for their shoe. Plenty of 80s nostalgia.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

What a perfect conclusion to Rocket’s story and the Guardians saga as a whole. This film was funny, yet also incredibly emotional, especially for people who adore the Guardians team. Chukwudi Iwuji puts on an amazing performance as The High Evolutionary, definitely one of the best villains of the MCU. Will Poulter’s performance as Adam Warlock is done well and enjoyable. As for our well-known Guardians team, it is very clear that the actors knew it could be their last performance together and so they put on a very good performance (especially Bradley Cooper and Chris Pratt). Overall, this film was a fucking fantastic, emotional, and bittersweet end to the team we’ve known and loved for almost ten years now.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

OH MY GOD, SPIDER-MAN IS AWESOME!

This movie was so good, building upon everything that happened in the pervious movie. The animation is great, so many new styles that are not only fun but also pleasing to the eyes of any viewer. The story is deeply emotionally driven and complex, leaving fans craving for more by the end of the film.

I can’t even tell you how many times my heart rate increased from watching things happen on screen. It was awesome.

Everything about this movie is awesome. The protagonist is awesome. The antagonists are awesome. The animation is awesome. Possibly the best Spider-Man film to date.

Miles Morales IS Spider-Man.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

This movie was okay. The Transformers franchise hasn’t been spectacular in hot minute, and while the movie is fine, it’s not a huge leap for the franchise by any means. It is overly corny and a desperate reach at salvation.

The final battle was cool to see in 3D though.

Bumblebee is the GOAT

Elemental

Was so bad that the 6-year-old I was with said she was bored and we left.

The Flash

Weird ass movie, but not bad. I enjoyed it. The first act was lacking in good performances, but it got better as the film progressed. There’s lots of hilariously spotty CGI moments across the entire film and whether it was intentional or not, it didn’t work for this movie.

This is truly the end of the DCEU though. It sends off and says goodbye the old DCEU and wholeheartedly welcomes James Gunn’s new DCU.

Ezra Miller isn’t the worst actor I’ve seen, but their performance doesn’t capture what I, among others think Barry Allen should be. Other than that, Sasha Calle was a great Supergirl, Keaton’s return as Batman was awesome, and Ben Affleck also did a good job as his own Batman.

Overall, I think The Flash is a good, at least decent movie. It makes some interesting choices regarding story, but at the end it’s a fun and enjoyable film for fans to enjoy.

Asteroid City

Haven’t seen a Wes Anderson film since Fantastic Mr. Fox so I wasn’t sure how seeing this movie would turn out. However, as I walked out of the theater I was determined to watch the rest of Wes Anderson’s filmography. This film was not only very visually pleasing, but also very thought provoking (in a good way) which is something I don’t think we see nearly enough in films anymore.

No Hard Feelings

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

While I do have some bigger issues about this movie, it is overall a good return and ending for the Indiana Jones series. It has good action, good characters (new and returning), and most importantly feels like an Indiana Jones movie. They tied up a couple loose ends, which was appreciated. Harrison Ford loves this character as much as if not more than the fans do, and to me that was prevalent in the movie. He did his best as an 80-year-old could do as an adventure-seeking archeologist past his prime. Mads Mikkelsen is a great villain, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a good choice for the part she played, and John Rhys-Davies plus Karen Allen’s returns were nostalgic and fun to see. If you’re a fan of the original trilogy, you’ll more than likely enjoy this film.

“Give ‘em hell, Indiana Jones!”

Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer starts off pretty slow until the Trinity Test, where it is then thrown forward into the aftermath of the creation and use of the bomb. It works for this movie, as it should. Don’t expect Oppenheimer to be a fast-paced and action-filled movie. It is based on reality and therefore feels real, one of the best things about the movie.

I can’t not talk about the explosion scene. It was very powerful and well done. My only question is how they got it to look so damn good. The eerie silence mixed with the visual of a endless ball of fire is a horrifying mixture that quite literally make my heart rate spike.

Christoper Nolan is a master of his craft which is demonstrated even further with the release of Oppenheimer. The only shame is that it is competing against Barbie, so it will not make as much money as I think it would’ve otherwise.

Cillian Murphy and RDJ both put on spectacular, Oscar worthy performances for their respective characters. I would be very surprised if neither of them got one for this movie.

Barbie

Going in, I didn’t know what to expect other than a fun feminist story from Greta Gerwig. While the movie is still that, it is also much more. I’ll be honest, Barbie is a very weird movie, but it sends an extremely powerful message to everyone about the treatment of women in todays society, and how we could ALL treat each other at least a little better and with more respect.

As a man, I loved Barbie and highly recommend it to everyone who can see it before it leaves theaters. It is a hilariously powerful movie that people will be sure to remember in the years coming.

If you’re an easy crier, be sure to bring tissues. Also, dressing up for the occasion is also highly recommended.

Barbie wins Barbenheimer for me.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

First off, I just want to talk about how much I like the new style of animation that is coming into play by various studios. It started with Into the Spider-Verse, which has since influenced other films across only 5 years, including this one and I’m so glad that it did. The animation allows the artists to have more creativity and fun while creating a fresh and visually appealing art style for viewers (I wrote a paper on this so I’m just obsessed with it).

I grew up watching the 90s movies, 2007 TMNT movie, and the 2012 animated series. Out of all of them, I think this movie feels the most teenager-like. Not only are they voiced by real teens, but they talk like real teenagers do. It gets cringy in a few moments, but it’s an accurate depiction of how teens act nowadays. The way they actually seem like teens is one of my favorite parts of the movie.

This movie also has a killer cast. Ice Cube is a surprisingly great villain when it comes to his voice, and with side characters voiced by people like Paul Rudd, Giancarlo Esposito, and Seth Rogen, how could you possibly go wrong?

For me, the movie only really started to get messy around the third act/final battle. It felt like it kept repeating the “We got him! Oh no we actually didn’t get him” thing way to often. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of heart and emotion in the third act, but the repetition and pacing took me out of some of it.

In the end, this movie is a really good new adaptation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that is filled with heart, laughs, and joy for new and old TMNT fans. I am very intrigued/excited for possible future installments for this franchise.

Blue Beetle

If you haven’t seen this movie or are for some reason refusing to see it in theaters, get over yourself and just go see the damn movie. It is good. Now, it’s not perfect by any means but it is an enjoyable, fun, and emotional superhero adventure and is on the better side of DCEU projects.

Xolo Maridueña is a fantastic live action Jaime Reyes. Not only does he look good, but the spirit he puts into the character really allows him to stand out and shine in his solo movie. Let’s not forget Bruna Marquezine being serving straight cunt + being a good love interest, George Lopez’s return to the superhero genre after Sharkboy and Lavagirl, and Raoul Trujillo who played a great villain.

This movie really seemed to hit home for people who consider themselves to be Latin X, and I agree with that a lot. I don’t know firsthand (because I’m white), but while watching with my best friend and her little sister (who are from Brazil, and are growing up in a Brazilian household) I could tell that they connected deeply with the story being told. They felt the love within Jaime’s family and could see themselves in the characters. They cheered and cried multiple times throughout the movie, and I couldn’t be more happy for them. Go see this movie, especially if you’re like them.

Overall, this is a good movie and you should go see it. There’s a lot of heart put into it, that helps audiences connect with the characters and develop and emotional story. Some of the CGI could’ve been better, but it’s not so bad that I want to talk about it a lot. Blue Beetle has a lot of Spider-Man vibes, which I think helps if you’re more of a Marvel fan, or just usually don’t see superhero movies in general. There could’ve been more focus on Victoria Kord (the CEO villain), but it’s made up for in the focus on Carapax.

This movie is worth it. I promise. Go see it so we can get more of Jaime Reyes and his family.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

8 years of waiting for the FNAF movie to be made. 8 years of expecting something well-written, scary, and worth the wait. 8 years for them to get it right and…they undelivered.

For the super-fans, this is a good movie. It’s got everything a FNAF fan would want: cameos, references to the games, lore, and Josh Hutcherson. However, for someone not as involved with and informed with the FNAF franchise, it falls flat a lot. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve watched play throughs of FNAF when I was younger. Markiplier was my jam, but the lack of a more serious tone and/or horror atmosphere killed my vibe.

The movie isn’t scary. The animatronics aren’t frightening to look at, even with their orange glowing eyes. The jump scares are also highly predictable. Sure, they are in the games too, but that is something this type of horror movie should be able to get done right. Another thing is that the blood/gore is toned down tremendously. This is mostly the fault of the rating being PG-13, whereas an R rated FNAF movie could’ve executed just how horrific things like “the bite of ‘87 scene” and the “springlocking” scene should have been. The last gripe I have relating with the fact that the movie isn’t scary is the fact that these are deadly, scary animatronics, right? So WHY THE FUCK are they building a fort with a little girl 😭. It’s just so silly.

The acting is decent, I don’t have a lot to say about it, there’s nothing horrible but also nothing extraordinary. Matthew Lillard is a great William Afton, I would love to see him come back in future installments, especially considering the major flashbacks I got from his role in Scream as Stu.

The story/script/plot is also just kind of silly. We don’t get a ton of depth into most of the characters, especially the animatronics, who deserve to be talked about more than they were considering that they’re pretty much the focus of the movie. William comes back out of what seems like nowhere at the end, which was really weird. There was no lead up to his return or anything, he was just there. Vanessa and Williams connection should’ve also been explored beyond a few lines. A lot more things regarding character development and depth could be discussed, but I’ll hold back.

Overall, this movie doesn’t meet expectations, especially considering the wait for it. If you’re a huge FNAF fan, you’ll probably enjoy it more but if you’re closer to a casual horror movie see-er, I’d just wait to stream it or something. That said, I’m still interested for where they’ll take this in future sequels and hope that they can learn from mistakes made on this one.

The Marvels

This is a very fun film. I enjoyed a lot of it and had a good time, but still it has its problems.

I was very wary with the films runtime before going in. Considering most Marvel movies are around 2.5 hours and this one comes in at only 1 hour and 45 minutes, my concern was about pacing. It’s not the worst paced film I’ve seen, but to me, the film does move very fast and seems like it tries to fit way to much into it than it has time for. Extending the movie by even just 15 minutes would’ve helped I think.

The humor in this movie was well done. There are some, very few, scenes where jokes extend their welcome but overall it was a pretty funny movie. Nick Fury and Kamala’s family carry the comedy in this movie.

The acting could’ve been a little better, especially coming from Brie Larson. Emotional scenes are ruined due to the nature of how she plays her character, which is very unfortunate considering how well she’s acted in other movies both in and beyond the MCU. Zawe Ashton was also fairly lackluster, pairing her unconvincing acting with one of the most forgettable, unimpactful, ann unimpressive villains of all time. That said, Iman Vellani steals the show as Ms Marvel. You can tell she has had a dream come true from working on this movie and genuinely cares about the character along with the work she puts in. Teyonah Parris has improved greatly since WandaVision, and I was very happy to see her get her moment to shine in this movie as well.

This movie really serves as setup for the future of the MCU, while for some reason being disguised as a traditional MCU film. If the movie was promoted differently, maybe it would actually make money instead of being a box office flop.

Anyways, if you didn’t want to go see The Marvels for the women or whatever, at least go see it for the setup. Especially during the end of the movie and the mid-credits scene, it seems to be the beginning of picking up loose threads and tying the MCU back together again. Hope may be restored for certain fans.
